Why Ordering a Bit More Wallpaper Is a Good Thing
If you’re new to wallpaper or mural installations, it’s completely natural to want to enter exact wall measurements when placing your order. After all, precision feels safe, right?
But here’s the thing: when it comes to wallpaper, “exact” can actually cause more problems than it solves. At Koko Art Shop, we always recommend ordering a little more, and we’re here to explain why that’s not just OK, it’s actually smart.
🧱 Walls Aren’t Perfect, and That’s Normal
Your walls might look flat and even, but in reality, very few walls are perfectly straight or square. Over time (and sometimes even from day one), buildings shift and settle, which leads to small deformations, a slight curve here, a sloped ceiling there, or baseboards that aren’t exactly level.

For this local project (Meeting room at OLO Architects) we made this mural a few inches longer.
When your mural is ordered to the exact inch, even these tiny irregularities can cause visible gaps during installation. And once you’ve unrolled and started applying a custom mural, finding out you're short on coverage is not the kind of surprise anyone wants.
✂️ Trimming Is a Normal Part of Installation
We get it, trimming sounds a little scary. No one wants to cut into a beautiful design! But trimming isn’t a mistake, it’s actually a standard part of professional wallpaper installation.

Think of it as a safety net. By allowing a few extra inches on all sides, you give yourself room to adjust, align, and position your mural just right. You’re not ruining anything, you’re ensuring a perfect fit.
At Koko Art Shop, we carefully design your mural so that key elements are centered and balanced, and any trimming happens around the edges where it won’t affect the overall look.
🛠️ Avoiding “Too Short” Is Key
Here’s the truth: a mural that’s a little too big can be trimmed. A mural that’s too small can’t be stretched.
When you fall short on custom wallpaper, the only solution is an Add On which means extra time, extra cost, and delays to your project. It’s much easier (and more cost-effective!) to plan ahead with a little extra material.
💡 Our Recommendation
We generally suggest adding 2–3 extra inches to both height and width when measuring your space. If you’re unsure, just send us your measurements and let us help! We’ll guide you on how much extra to order based on your project and mural design.
🖼️ We’ve Got You Covered
At Koko Art Shop, your mural is made to order with care, and we want it to install beautifully in your space. So don’t be afraid of a little trimming. It’s not your enemy, it will contribute to a smooth, stress-free installation.
